Freeing Myself From Books On My “Currently Reading” Shelf

On my Goodreads shelf, I have 7 books. Or… had. I decided to free myself from some of the 7 on my currently reading shelf, and if you have books hanging around, I urge you to do the same! I feel so much cleaner now I don’t have these books on my virtual shelf because they are on my real, too, and it’s a relief to be able to put them down – even temporarily.

The books I removed were:

  1. Autumn by Ali Smith – this has been on my currently reading since November 2017… yup. I was intrigued but honestly the writing style just isn’t for me. I might actually pick this up and finish it one day in the future because it was really well received by critics and I do want to know what happened… but nah.
  2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – try two of reading this book has ended in another dnf, but this time I was a little more through. I will finish this book this year, but just not right now.
  3. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte – I put this one down at the same time as Jane Eyre, and the reason is because my essays took over. I was actually really enjoying this book, so, like with JE, I want to pick it up again sometime this year. When, however, I don’t know.
  4. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell – I’ve read this book like 5 or 6 times, but picked it up again because I was annotating it for a friend (we each picked favourite books of ours that the other hadn’t read and were annotating them for each other… but neither of us ever finished that endeavour, and we started it around this time last year!). I haven’t DNF’d this one, because, like I said, I’ve read it many a time, but I’ve removed it from my currently reading shelf.

So now on my TBR, I have:

  • My current read. I’m actually prewriting this post, so who knows what it’ll be at this time!
  • Facing Up and Facing the Frozen Ocean by Bear Grylls – I’ve read Facing Up but not Facing the Frozen Ocean. This has been on my “currently reading” shelf since February 2015 though, and at this point it’s a running joke to myself, so it’s staying.
  • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi – I was enjoying this… but didn’t finish it. I’d like to, though. Currently I’m on holiday without it however, so I don’t know when I’ll get the chance.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the books I DNF’d and ones I’ve temporarily DNF’d but hope to read in full in the future!

How many books are you currently reading? Can you ever read more than one book?!

Books I’m “Currently Reading” On Goodreads

I swear whenever I do this post, the same books crop up again and again because I never actually finish them. Well, despite that I thought I would do an updated version to see how things have changed!

Goodreads currently says I am 4 books “behind schedule,” and this Easter I’m hoping to read a bunch. I’ve been in a reading slump for a while, so here’s hoping I can change that ASAP! I miss reading!

I currently have seven (!) books on my CR shelf, so here’s a little tour of that…

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

This has been on my currently reading for a few months, and I’m reading a specific copy that I’m actively writing in. I’ll finish this one sometime this summer, honest!

My CR shelf wouldn’t feel like mine if I didn’t have this monster on it. It’s become an inside running joke with, uh, myself, since 2015.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I have been reading this for a while now, and I’m determined to finish it soon! I’m about half way through it, I think, and I’m actually reading it for university so I need to get a jog on.

Autumn by Ali Smith

To be honest, I think I might DNF this book. It’s just not for me, but I’m almost exactly half way through it and I did find it really different… I don’t know. I have, however, actually been reading this since autumn.

The difference between this one and the one before is that I’m actually really enjoying this one, and I can’t remember why I put it down! I definitely need to pick it back up again and finish it…

Flirtology by Jean Smith

This is an eARC from NetGalley (non-fic), and I really need to finish it! The reason I haven’t yet finished this one is because I transferred to a new phone, from where I was reading it, and haven’t yet downloaded it to my new one. I’ll get on it! Although, to be honest, I’m not really learning anything so it may be a DNF.

The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu

WHY HAVE I NOT FINISHED THIS YET?! I do not know. I LOVED Moxie by the same author, and for some reason I just haven’t finished this one. It might be because I’m reading it on my phone, so I’m reading it slower and I’m less inclined to pick it up, but I really do want to finish it ASAP!

So there is an updated currently reading shelf tour from Goodreads! I’ve actually just started reading Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett too, so that might be making a late addition to this article… although I think I’d like to finish Alice first! My goal for the end of May is to have my currently reading down to 2 – my Bear Grylls’ book, and the book I’m actually reading!

What’s on your currently reading shelf? Do you have many, like me, or just one? Let me know in the comments! PS – follow me on Goodreads if you’d like to stay up with my out-of-control shelf!

‘Currently Reading’ Goodreads Shelf Tour

Hello all! Today I thought I would chat about my Goodreads’ currently reading shelf.

gr crI used to be a strictly only reading-one-book-at-a-time kinda gal, but recently I noticed that my CR (currently reading) was up to 6! A shocking amount for me.

Why do I have so many? Well, if I talk you through them, it might help you to understand! The first one is one I wanted to mention first, and then the others are just the way they appear on my CR list on Goodreads.

1. The first book that I notice on my currently reading shelf is Facing Up and Facing the Frozen Ocean by Bear Grylls. Holy smokes – the first book in this bind up, Facing Up, is actually incredible.

I started reading this book in 2015 (!) and it’s become a bit of a personal running joke that it’s always on my currently reading. I’m actually kinda nervous for the day I finally finish this bind up (I read the first novel and not the second, if you were curious), because my shelf will be lonely without it!

2. Secondly, we have The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. This is a pretty recent addition to my shelf, and I’m actually hoping to finish it today! This is one of the books I’m actually actively reading!

3. Next up, we have Bonfire by Krysten Ritter, which is a NetGalley ARC I am reading on my Kindle. I was completely drawn to this because Krysten Ritter is the actress who plays Jessica Jones in the Marvel francise, but I’m not completely hooked on her book just yet. Sadly.

4. Fourthly, we have Autumn by Ali Smith. I’m actually really enjoying this book, but I’m finding it so exhausting to read! It’s told in a kind of prose-poetry kind of way, and every time I put it down, I feel like I’ve read something incredible, but also that I want to leave it on my shelf and never touch it again.

5. Next we have the audiobook I’m listening to – War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. I’m about an hour into this audiobook, and I’m absolutely loving reliving one of my favourite stories!

6. And finally, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Not only is this one of my favourite books of all time, but I’m actually annotating this book for my friend as we’re doing a book swap. I’m so excited about it, and although this is slow going as I’m annotating everything, I’m taking it slow and enjoying my reread.

So there you go! I really hope you enjoyed this virtual tour of my Goodreads Currently Reading Shelf. You can add me on Goodreads, and see all these books (and notice when I eventually finish them!).

What’re you currently reading?
