Monthly Reading Wrap-Up | July 2021

Another month is over in 2021, and I can’t quite believe how fast it’s going! The first four months of the year crawled by at a snail’s pace, and now they’ve flown by!

July was quite a busy month for me. I finished my first year of teaching (my training year, but it was also a full year!), went to stay with my partner, had a mini-break, and attended my first wedding reception as an adult! It was a blast, and I had a really lovely month, especially the last few weeks of it.

Unboxing | Books That Matter: “Herland” | July 2021

Books That Matter delivered another stellar box this month, and even though, for the first time, I already had the book, I was still very excited to open it.

“Herland” was themed around feminist utopia and dystopia. In recent months, pop culture has seen the rise of dystopias once again, with the likes of books released in the pandemic as well as hits such as The Handmaid’s Tale. I think it’s a really interesting theme to have a book box themed around, especially a feminist one like BTM.

Unboxing | Books By Nature: Holding All the Cards | June 2021

Books By Nature have delivered another stellar box!

Books By Nature is a fabulous bi-monthly (every other month) book box, and in June we received another fantastic box from them. The month’s theme was Holding the Cards and not only did we receive a book that is high on my want list, but the other goodies inside the box were very well curated to fit into the theme! Every box from BBN feels like a proper treat.

What I also love about this company is that with every box you buy, you are also donating to plant a tree somewhere in the world. As a BBN member, you can vote on where the next trees should be planted. This month’s tree was planted in Haiti.

So, without further ado, let’s actually dive into what was incuded in the box! Be warned: it was packed.

  • Vegan sweets from Elizabeth & Ernest
  • A handmade, crocheted cup cozy by Cream Soda Crochet
  • Card themed socks from Wow Socks
  • A lollipop, two handmade sugar lip scrubs, and a scrunchie
  • A book review tear off notepad
  • Promotional bookmark from a Holly Bourne novel
  • And of course, the book: Ace of Spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide

Phew, what an epic box! I think my favourite item, aside from the sweets which I devoured as soon as I took a photo, was the book review tear-off notepad. I’ve always wanted one of these notepads, and now I finally have one! I have already forgotten to use it, but I know it’s one I will use in the future once I remember!

The socks were also a great item, especially as they are themed to the book. When I start reading Ace of Spades, I will definitely be wearing these socks. Such a random, yet exciting thing for a book lover!

So let’s get onto the book. Ace of Spades is a young adult thriller set in a private academy. The students there are perfect – until an anonymous texter begins to bring dark secrets to life. Devon, a talented musician, can’t escape his private photos being made public. And head girl Chaimaka isn’t afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone know the price she has paid for her power. The Aces – the texters – are out to get them both. And they’re planning much more than a high-school game…

This book has been getting rave reviews, and I nearly bought it a couple of weeks ago in a bookshop, so I’m glad I didn’t! I’ve recently been getting back into YA novels, and I always love a thriller, so it’s perfect for me.

Don’t forget to follow Books By Nature on Instagram if you’re interested in getting your own box! As for me? You betcha I’m purchasing the next one!

And don’t forget to follow me on my Instagram if you want to check out more of my bookish content. What did you think of this box?

Mid-Year Book Check-In! | 2021

We’re already half-way through the year: can you believe it?! The world is already different to just six months ago, and my reading has also changed from 2020…

You can see my 2020 version here, which was quite different to now! I was posting weekly reading wrap-ups of 2-4 books a week – I wish I was still reading that many books! The first few months of 2020 were spent working hard, and then being plunged into quarantine, and in April I read 30 books! This April? 7!

Unboxing | Books That Matter: Pride | June 2021

June is Pride month, and as usual Books That Matter have released their June Pride box! This box was easily my favourite so far of all of the BTM boxes I have ever received, so read on to find out why…

I think it’s easiest if we get onto what was inside this box before I start telling you why I loved it so much! So, what was included?

Books I Want to Read This Summer!

It really does feel like summer is checking in here in the UK! It has been hot, and it’s got me thinking, of course, about what I want to read this summer. Let’s take a look at my TBR…

I am planning on doing a “summer of series” this year, which I’ll talk about later on, but I’m only sketching that out to be the six week summer holiday (as I’m a teacher!), so all of these books are the standalones I want to dive into. This TBR is therefore pretty short, because I have many other books to read…

Why You Should Shop In Indie Bookshops

It’s so easy nowadays to simply click “purchase” on an Amazon basket and have a book delivered straight to your door the next day. Minimum effort, zero fuss, rarely any problems. Book prices on Amazon are often lower than in stores, so why would you go anywhere else?

There are plenty of reasons to shop at independent bookshops rather than corporations such as Amazon. Ultimately, our high street shops keep us going. Could you imagine walking to your local village, town, or city, and every single shop being bordered up?

Unboxing | Books That Matter: Choose Love | May 2021

I am still loving this gorgeous, feminist book box. I have been buying this book box for a few months now, and I am continuously enjoying them.

Books That Matter sometimes teams up with other charities and companies, and this month they have partnered with Choose Love, a charity that supports refugees from around the world. In their store, you can buy merchandise as well as purchasing things like nappies, portable phone chargers, emergency blankets, and tents which go straight to the people who need them the most. In the future, I am definitely planning on supporting this charity further.
