This month, Books That Matter teamed up with Faber to bring the exclusive Sally Rooney book club box to celebrate the release of Beautiful World, Where Are You. This box had some goodies from Faber and some nice snacks which I’ll talk about in this article!
This month, we received…:
- Promotional tote bag
- 2x bookmarks featuring characters from the book
- 1x art print of the characters from the book
- “My Sweet Chickpea” dark chocolate roasted chickpeas
- Doisy & Dam dark chocolate buttons
- Books that Matter newsletter
- And the book: Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney
Whilst I enjoyed this book box at the time, looking back on it, it definitely did not match up to the August book box, which I loved!
The prints are probably my favourite thing from this box, and that’s saying a lot, as they aren’t things I necessarily would have bought myself! I do like the bookmarks, and I think they are very high quality. The print is of a similar priority, but I guess I expected more from this box when we were told it was in collaboration with Faber!
The tote bag is pretty cute, but I recently learnt that tote bags are not as environmentally friendly as we think, and it’s very much put me off them! Book boxes seem to rely heavily on tote bags and even though they are good for promotion, I’d actually prefer a paper bag like Waterstones uses!
I have yet to try the sweet treats. I tried some dark chocolate crispy balls from Doisy & Dam recently and didn’t like them, but hopefully I will enjoy the dark chocolate buttons! I also really enjoy chickpeas when they are mushed up, but I’ve not got a clue what I will think of them covered in chocolate! Luckily I do have a vegan friend who I think will really enjoy these treats if I don’t, so I can always gift them to her.
Ultimately, I think I just expected more from BTM here. However, the box is pretty cheap compared to others (£17 + P&P). Considering the book itself costs £16.99, we have got a good deal! I just think maybe something like a pin badge could have got me more excited! Some merch is very repetitive and boring, and I want publishers to have a go at being more adventurous.
Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her. In Dublin, her best friend, Eileen, is getting over a break-up and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood. Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon are still young—but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. They have sex, they worry about sex, they worry about their friendships and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world? – via Goodreads
I must be one of the only book people who has never read a Sally Rooney book, so Beautiful World Where Are You will probably be my first of hers! I do want to have a go at her books, though I am not sure what I will think of them as I do not often read literary/contemporary adult fiction: if I do read contemporary, it tends to be YA. However, the characters are a similar age to me, so maybe I will find it relatable!
A bit of a mixed bag this month and some mixed opinions from me. I think my opinion will honestly depend on if I enjoy this book or not, but whether or not I do, I will be able to lend it to others too!
I do have high hopes for the October box, so we shall see what we receive!
What did you think of this box? Would you have bought it?
Until the next time,
