UNBOXING | Books That Matter February 2021 | GIRL, GODDESS, OTHER

Today I am going to be sharing my unboxing of Books That Matter’s February 2021 box! The theme of this month was GIRL, GODDESS, OTHER.

Overall, I really enjoyed this box! I thought it was very aesthetically pleasing in lovely lilac colours, and the contents all worked really well together. Sometimes I think you can get book boxes that look like 7 different people each added an item, but not here.

Inside this box we received:

  • A watermelon gel face mask by Mallows Beauty
  • Stickers of Medusa and Artemis by MythsnTits
  • An Artemis/Aphrodite Bookmark by MythsnTits
  • A Circe blank notebook by MythsnTits
  • A “Girl Gang” tote by MythsnTits
  • The Girl, Goddess, Other newsletter by Books That Matter
  • The Emperor’s Babe by Bernadine Evaristo

I think MythsNTits have a really beautiful art style, but I think my one criticism of this box was that I would have liked to see a wider variety of artists. Ultimately, aside from the face mask, this box almost seemed like a collaboration between MythsNTits and Books That Matter, which would have been fine except it wasn’t advertised as that! There’s such a wide variety of artists who focus around mythology, it would have been great to see.

(Also, even though the book was Roman, the artwork was Greek, so it would have been nice to see some Diana/Venus instead!)

What did I think of the book?

The Emperor’s Babe isn’t my favourite novel of all time! I thought it was a really strange, experimental read which I did appreciate, however the writing style frustrated me. It was a weird mix of 211AD speech and 21st Century dialect. I get that this was the point, but it’s hard to stay straight faced when characters unironically say, “That’s Gucci!”

I also just didn’t find it enjoyable and was skimming by the end of the book. It was quite raunchy (which wasn’t unenjoyable!) and rude, which was a redeeming aspect as it did feel real and gritty. I like books like that.

Overall, I think this book had great potential, but it felt like a first draft of a new author’s experimental style that an editor is going to come and tidy up.

My Final Thoughts

I did really enjoy this box! Even though the novel wasn’t my favourite, I appreciate any opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and try something new.

What about you? What did you think of GIRL, GODDESS, OTHER?
